The 41 Story
Bunker41 is named after the room the work started in. Number 41, and “going down to the bunker” is what it got called long before it was a company.
It turned out to be the right metaphor. Most of what gets sold as web design is a brochure made out of templates — looks fine, falls over the first time it’s asked to do real work. We build the other kind: fortified, owned by the people it’s built for, not due for replacement in two years.
The name is the room. The work matches.
What We Build
Three things, and only three:
- Shopify engineering — the work underneath the theme. Shipping that quotes real parcel and freight rates at checkout, checkout that behaves when the order is a pallet, inventory that matches what’s actually on the floor, custom Shopify apps.
- Custom applications — a Ruby on Rails API on the backend with native iOS and Android on the front, built so the pieces fit. The thing that replaces the spreadsheet nobody wants to touch.
- Fast sites — statically generated, served from a CDN, edited through a CMS you own. No database to breach, no plugins to patch, nothing to go down at 2am.

How We Work
- You talk to the people building it. No account managers, no ticket number routed through three desks. Ask a question, get an answer from someone who has the code open.
- Written process from day one. Proposal, schedule, change-request rules, weekly Friday updates. You always know what’s happening, what’s next, and what we need from you.
- You own everything. Code, content, the domain, the hosting account. No proprietary lock-in. If you ever want to leave, you take all of it with you.
- Scope first, then a flat price. Nothing is quoted by the page or billed by surprise. Larger work starts with a paid discovery step so the number at the end is real.
- Instrumented, so failures are visible. Integrations that fail silently are the expensive kind. Ours report.
